Pet Surgery FAQs

Typically, most surgeries do require your pet to be put under general anesthesia. This is for the comfort and well-being of your pet, as well as for the safety of the vet team.

2. Why Can’t My Pet Eat before Surgery?

It is recommended that your pet not eat after the night before the procedure/surgery. This is to reduce the chances of complications from the anesthesia.

3. Is Pet Surgery Risky?

While all procedures/surgeries carry a certain level of risk, most of them are completed without any significant complications. Pets are given a pre-surgical exam to ensure they are healthy enough to undergo the procedure and they are monitored carefully during and after to ensure there are no problems.

4. What Can I Expect at Home?

Your pet will likely be given a collar to wear which will prevent him from biting the stitches. He will be groggy for a day or two after surgery and probably won't want to eat much but be sure to offer small meals and plenty of water. Allow him to rest in a quiet, comfortable space, away from other pets and small children. You'll also likely need to administer pain medication and antibiotics, as well as clean and change the wound dressing as directed by the vet.
